Dao Sword Description The tang dao is a single handed Chinese saber, or broadsword, with a single edged blade used for chopping and slashing. Originally dating back to the Bronze Aged Shang Dynasty (1766-1122 B.C.E.), the dao gained fame during the Han Dynasty. Common dao blade designed typically come from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 C.E.). This sword is from the Tang dynasty from 690-705 B.C.E. The dao was the common weapon of the cavalry during the early Han dynasty (206 B.C.E-220 C.E.) but it evolved into an infantry weapon, replacing the han jian. It ranged in size between 34”-45” and was used with a rectangular shield. Middle eastern and European sabers were influenced by the design of the dao since the Mongol invasion in the 13th century.
