This example dates to the first quarter of the 19th century during the second half of the American Federal period when the classical design movement became the prevalent style in the country. This serving cabinet is intended to accompany a late Federal / early Classical period dining room sideboard. These sideboards are typically five or six feet in length and command their own wall in the dining room. These serving cabinets are intended to be placed on an opposing or adjacent wall in the dining room for the purpose of having additional storage and serving space.
