Framed Embroidered Chinese Silk Hat Applique Republic
A Chinese black silk applique that was probably made for a hat. The applique has been embroidered with bats and peaches around a central lotus or peony flower. The petals are outlined with a thin border of gold coached threads. The applique was attached to a round black silk edged with a brocade ribbon with red flowers on a blue background. The frame is a gold tone aluminum frame with a cream color mat. The back is a heavy red card stock. It has a twisted wire cord for hanging. I purchased this in 1980 in Bellingham, Washington. MEASUREMENTS 22 ½” (57.2 cm) tall x 22” (55.9 cm) wide x 1” (2.5 cm) thick. Weighs 6 lbs 13 oz (3100 g) CONDITION The threads show very little fading and remain tight. There is wear to the silk at the tips of the blossom. The embroidery was not secured perfectly on the mat, and so it slide down a little bit many years ago.
