
Japanese Meiji Satsuma Koro with Warriors, Women and Children
The satsuma koro is richly decorated with elaborate panels of warriors, women and children. The koro has an urn-shaped body with a very sharp , short shoulder sits atop a short base. The body has a fine base crackle glaze with four different designs painted over glaze enamels and extensive gilding. One large panel has a group of seated samurai and two younger boys in training. The other large panel has many women with their children standing outside in a garden. Two smaller panels are women and children seated in a garden. The base is glazed. The base has a cartouche topped with a cross within a round circle. This is the kamon (family crest) of Satsuma's ruling Shimazu clan. The cartouche below has four characters. MEASUREMENTS 3 7/8” (9.8 cm) diameter x 3 ¾” (9.5 cm) tall. Weighs 8.7 oz (250 g) CONDITION There are no breaks, chips or cracks. The koro is missing it’s top.
