On October 28, 1935, a group of young actors from NewYork opened on Broadway at the Belasco Theatre in PulitzerPrize-winning playwright Sidney Kingsley's Dead End. In 1937, producer Samuel Goldwyn and director William Wylerimported six of the actors for United Artists’ Dead End film version.Their performances pleased audiences so much that their characters were writteninto nearly seven dozen sequels produced during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s asfeature films and serials at Warner Bros., Universal Studios, and MonogramPictures. Many actors appeared in the series, including Billy Halop, BobbyJordan, Huntz Hall, Charles Duncan, Bernard Punsly, Gabriel Dell, FrankieThomas, Billy Benedict, David Gorcey, and Leo Gorcey. Leading men appearingopposite the boys included James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, JohnGarfield, Pat O'Brien, and Ronald Reagan, to name only a few.
