Based on a series of overcoats linked to the Army of the Potomac (before being renamed by General Lee to the Army of Northern Virginia in June of 1862), these coats appear to have been a early production of the Richmond Clothing Bureau or local manufacture of Virginia. The known images are linked to a number of different regiments and brigades, with dates attributed to the images ranging from the winter of 1861-1862 into the winter of 1862.  While there are variations seen within the images, an overall pattern appears to exist. These features include a tall standing collar (with closing tab), short to mid-lengthen cape (with no buttons), predominately wooden buttons, shoddy broadcloth, and machine sewn. The reproduction replicates these features and is made from grey and brown shoddy broadcloths.
