Officially not permitted until the spring of 1864, the use of depot produced garments within the officer corp would appear to have begun sometime in 1862 on a fairly common basis. While not as common as the use of privately tailor made frocks and shell jackets, these depot jackets served the company grade officers throughout the conflict. The reproduction is based on several surviving examples, with the modifications based on those found on a modified jacket worn by an officer of the 2nd Virginia. The base jacket is a standard Richmond Clothing Bureau Jacket made from English Army Cloth, with the epaulets and belt loops removed. The collar and cuffs were trimmed in blue, Austrian braid applied to the sleeves, and collar rank added. Additional historical information can be found here.
