The Madonna Inn—that gloriously over-the-top fever dream in San Luis Obispo, California. One of California’s best roadside attractions, dripping with kitsch, history, the weird, the wonderful and the perfectly beautiful. It offers a backdrop for you to pretend to be a star. When I stayed here, I smoked cigarettes I didn’t buy and pretended to be British. No reason other than I could. The best hotels ignite you to be someone else.
