It performed at high speeds and altitudes to outrace enemies during aerial combat, and was also able to detect and avoid ground missile attacks. This AF1 model represents the SR-71 Bureau Number 61-7980. SR-71A #61-7980 (NASA 844) is on display inside the main gate at NASA Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards AFB, CA. SR-71A #61-7980 was one of the two aircraft handed over to NASA in 1990 for their high-speed research programs. Assembly of this aircraft began on 11 August 1966 and the rollout was on 16 May 1967.
