He traveled with the circus throughout his early life (from the mid-1910s to the early 1930s) and learned a lot about tattooing. His supply company, Zeis Studio, sold flash, pigments, machines, and other supplies; Zeis was the first to offer colored flash. When it was first offered in 1951, the Zeis School of Tattooing published "Tattooing the World Over," an accredited home study course that included 20 lessons and cost $125. By this time, the Zeis Studio had become world-famous, and Zeis had established himself as one of the world's greatest tattooists.
