It was first used to identify the family in the 12th century. After a public competition the submission of graphic designer Charles A. R. Dunn was chosen as the official design for the flag. The design was adopted on October 15, 1938. The District of Columbia Flag ranked 8th in design out of 72 North American Flags according to a 2001 North American Vexillological Association pole.
