The principal coloring component of marigold flowers is lutein, a fat soluble carotenoid, which is responsible for the yellow to orange color to the dye. It also contains galenite, lycopene, V-carotene. Marigolds also contain medicinal properties. It is used internally in the treatment of indigestion, colic, severe constipation, cough and dysentery.
