This coffee comes from the Wild West of the Big Island, Puna, near the Io Kea (white hawk) area. We think of Puna coffees as being hydroponic, in a sense. They grow over rocky, volcanic landscapes with little soil and massive amounts of rain. In fact, the roots can be found hanging in the lava tube caves that run below upper Puna. Often, farmers have to drill holes in the rock to plant or replace their crops.Interaction with the young volcanic landscape may contribute to the mineral-like flavors in many Puna coffees, that are similar to the slate flavors common in German white wines. It's also common to taste notes of almond, rose, and tea.Similar to Hamakua coffee, this Puna Peaberry is nutty, mild, and perfect as an every day drinking coffee. It's washed in rain water, and comprised of the varieties caturra, catuai, and typica.
