Mexico Bird Friendly® Coffee
Presidio de los Reyes is a remote Indigenous community in the Sierra Madre mountains of Nayarit, Mexico. Coffee here is grown in small forest plots called parcelas under a communal land system that protects shared territory and prevents privatization. The Bird Friendly farms are made up of 24 small forested hillside plots and they only produce a limited number of this unique shade grown coffee per year. You may notice the average elevation for this coffee is lower than many specialty coffees, which is possible due to its northerly latitude. These shaded farms support both traditional livelihoods and healthy forest habitat for migratory birds. Many of these birds that use the farms migrate along the Pacific flyway and spend their summers in the PNW, where we proudly roast this coffee.
