Botanical: Boswellia sacra Harvest: Wildcrafted Plant part: Oleo gum resin Source: Salalah, Sultanate of Oman Olfactive ExperienceA dry, smooth desert aroma with soft notes of citrus and pineFeelSoothing, mindful, anointed The arid dry landscapes in the Dhofar region of Oman are home to Boswellia sacra, where this wild species of Frankincense is only found growing in abundance. Commonly referred to as ‘olibanum’ and locally as ‘luban’, this oleo gum resin is imbued with legends of magic, mystery, and myth. This fine hojari grade resin was traditionally reserved for divine worship and considered sacred to the gods. Burned during sacrificial and religious ceremonies, offered in temples, praised for its medicinal benefits and importance in perfumery, frankincense has played a very important role in the religious and domestic lives of ancient Egyptian, Persian, Hebrew, Greek and roman civilizations and has at times demanded prices more than that of gold. Nearly all parts of the tree have been used in traditional remedies from the pollen, to the bark, resin, fruits, and ashes. The method for harvesting frankincense has not changed much in the past several thousand years. Incisions are made in the bark of the trunk or branches where the secretory tissues occur, the slowly exuded resin is collected when it hardens sufficiently. The resin is rich in Boswellic acid, when kindled the environment is infused with a smooth aroma with hints of orange and desert winds, the scent of ancient lands. Kindled frankincense resin is believed to have curative, protective, and cleansing properties. Shop our Frankincense essential oil, artisanally distillation from this resin here. 35 g
