#75 Western Meadowlark Western Meadowlarks are abundant in the grasslands, meadows, and fields of the West and Midwest, where in the breeding season the males sing their flutelike melodies from conspicuous perches. They are flashy birds, with black V-shaped bands on yellow breasts, and popular symbols of those open ranges: six states—Kansas,  Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, and Wyoming—call it their state bird.
