It features large flowers, with frilly white standards and deep purple falls with white and yellow streaking at the throats. Bearded Iris have 6 petals. Three face upward, called "standards" and three face downward, called "falls". They get the "beard" name from the fuzzy feature at the upper base of the falls. Grown from a bulb-like tuberous root called a rhizome. The German Iris family are fragrant, bloom twice a year, and form clumps of sword shaped leaves. They are easy to grow and generally deer and rabbit resistant. Plant in full sun with well-drained, fertile soil. Once established, they can become somewhat drought tolerant. Too much water can rot the rhizomes. Regular doses of compost or fertilizer are best. An excellent plant to use as a specimen planting, Iris are architectural and elegant in their look.
