Trachycarpus fortunei A cold-hardy palm that grows in the north! Featuring large, 3' wide fan-shaped green leaves on top of a hairy, singular trunk, it provides year-round tropical green to your garden. A slow growing palm that can survive winters as far north as zone 7. Thrives in full sun, mature specimens can reach 60 feet tall over a long period of time, although a 20' maturity height is more in line with what to expect in northern zones. Winter protection: Plant in a protected area, such as a south-facing side of your home. Heavily mulch base in the fall. For added protection, the entire tree can be wrapped in burlap over the winter from the base to the top. Some will wrap holiday lights around the tree before wrapping for an added heat source.
