This skirt is named after Zabadani, a mountain town northwest of Damascus near the Lebanese border. Before the war, Zabadani was known for its apple orchards, vineyards, cold springs, and summer guesthouses. Families from across Syria traveled there to escape the heat, walking through shaded gardens and quiet streets lined with fruit trees. It was a place associated with rest, fresh air, and open space. During the war, Zabadani came under a long siege. Supply routes were cut off, and access to food, fuel, and medicine became extremely limited. Movement within the town grew dangerous under shelling and sniper lines. Residents survived through rationing, shared kitchens, and private networks of care. Evacuation agreements shifted repeatedly, and families lived with long stretches of uncertainty - not knowing whether they would remain, leave, or return.
