The UN’s humanitarian mission metamorphosed to a peacekeeping operation under the weight of “bandit” attacks. These operations thenescalated in some areas into open warfare although rarely on the scale presented in themovie Blackhawk Down. In more recent years Somalia has divided into 3 sub-nations. While Somaliland andPuntland have achieved some measure of stability the regional nations still struggle tobring some measure of stability to more than half the country. Somalia is a high level simulation of several key periods in the recent history of Somalia.
