Seachem Purigen is a macroporous synthetic polymer that removes impurities from the water. It controls ammonia, nitrite and nitrate by removing organic wastes from the water while having minimal impact on trace elements. It darkens progressively as it is used and can be renewed by treating with bleach in accordance with the instructions on the package.
