Colonel Robert Gould Shaw 54th Massachusetts
This toy soldier depicts Colonel Robert Gould Shaw of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry in 1/30 scale. The figure comes in a box with a matte finish, making it a great addition to any collection. Shaw, from a prominent Boston abolitionist family, took command of the 54th Massachusetts in 1863. This was the first all-black regiment from the Northeast. Known for his strict discipline, Shaw trained his men rigorously for battle. They were eventually sent south to take part in an attempt to capture Charleston, specifically the defending fortification known as Battery Wagner. During the battle, Shaw bravely mounted a parapet and urged his men forward. However, he was shot through the chest three times (some reports claim as many as seven). The fighting continued until 10 p.m., when the Union forces withdrew, having suffered heavy losses.
