Antique Georgian cameo brooch set in a later, Victorian mount. 18k gold, natural coral. Coral from Italy; gold mount of unknown origin (English or European). Measurements: Weight is 20.8 grams. 1 5/8 inches (4cm) long. Description : Carved coral bust in the form of Dionysus, Bacchus or a bachante - a mythological figure related to wine as can be seen by the grapes and vine leaves. Bacchus was also associated with various animals, in particular the leopard or panther. The animal worn as a cape by this figure has long bat-like ears and a wavy pelt that intertwines with the locks of the god. Beautiful detail to the grape theme in the hair and superbly carved hand and facial features. Animal is no less detailed and superbly depicted.Quality of the carving is outstanding. Coral of a beautiful orange color. Regular tone, glossy and creamy. The coral was carved no later than the 18th century. It is set in a later, Victorian gold mount with foliate incised decoration.
