Javelin

The Javelin is the name of a light spear designed primarily for casting as a ranged weapon. Cohorts of throwers were often employed in hit-and-run maneuvers to harass and taunt unprotected battalions, disrupting close formations. Cavalries would often hurl several volleys to soften enemy forces prior to a frontal attack. Skill with a Javelin was so admired it became a regular part of the ancient Olympics.
