French Riflemen Body
Historical Details In 1940, France found itself facing a rapidly collapsing military situation against Nazi Germany during the early phase of World War II. After Germany launched its invasion in May, French strategy, built around static defense and the expectation of a repeat of World War I, was quickly outmaneuvered. While France had heavily fortified its eastern border with the Maginot Line, German forces bypassed these defenses by advancing through the Ardennes, a region French planners had considered difficult for large scale attack. The German use of fast moving armored units and coordinated air support, known as Blitzkrieg, overwhelmed French and Allied forces, leading to chaotic retreats and encirclements. After capitulation, French forces would still play key roles in the allied plan to stop Axis expansion, ranging from intelligence, sabotage, and playing major roles in combat with French colonial soldiers fighting across the world.
