Historical Details In the 1930s, tensions would arise across Europe due to Hitler's expansion into Austria and Czechoslovakia. To deter continued conquest, France and Britain would begin to guarantee Poland's independence in an attempt to dissuade Germany's recent policies. German propaganda would only use this to their advantage,  exclaiming the Allied powers were encircling Germany. On September 1st, German troops would invade Poland, starting the Second World War in Europe. Polish troops fought bravely, but were no match against the better equipped and more organized Wehrmacht. The Polish situation was made worse when the Soviets crossed into Poland, declaring war on September 17th. During the Siege of Warsaw, the Luftwaffe targeted civilian and military factories alike, although a bloody siege of the Polish capital would ensue, the Germans would prove victorious 20 days after the siege had started.
