This interesting flag is known as the Flag of the Green Mountain Boys or sometimes as the Stark Flag.  This flag served as the regimental colors for the famous Green Mountain Boys militia during the American Revolution. The Green Mountain Boys were led by the American Patriot Ethan Allen who established the unit in 1770 in the region between New York and New Hampshire that would eventually become the state of Vermont.  Allen and the Green Mountain Boys distinguished themselves in battle in capturing Fort Ticonderoga from the British in 1775 and again at the Battle of Bennington in 1777. The flag is sometimes referred to as the Stark Flag after John Stark who was a Major General in the Continental Army.  Stark, a native of New Hampshire, had a distinguished military career.  He first served as an officer during the French and Indian War.  Later, he fought in several important engagements during the Revolutionary War including the Battles of Bunker Hill, Trenton, Princeton, and Springfie
