Bacitracin from Bacillus subtilis
Bacitracin, is a small cyclic polypeptide that binds to dolichol-PP preventing its dephosphorylation to dolichol-P, which is needed to build the oligosaccharide.Bacitracin disrupts Gram-positive bacteria by interfering with cell wall and peptidoglycan synthesis. Unlike other oral administrative drugs, bacitracin is primarily used as a topical preparation as it can cause kidney damage. Bacitracin interferes with the dephosphorylation of bactoprenol, a membrane carrier molecule that transports the building blocks of the peptidoglycan bacterial cell wall outside of the inner membrane.
