Keep Opuntia in bright, direct light, although it can thrive in bright indirect light (south-facing window is ideal). Water when soil is completely dry! Although non-toxic to cats and dogs, be careful of the spines as they can be hazardous.  Cactus species are currently experiencing increased vulnerability as their popularity rises; Today, approximately one-third of all cacti/succulent species are facing extinction. Many of these species are listed on the IUCN’s Red List as critically endangered.
