Story of Soupe Joumou (Freedom Soup)

48" x 24" Acrylic on Canvas The painting depicts the story of Soup Joumou (Freedom Soup), a symbol of Haitian independence. Under French control, Haitians were denied pumpkins, a delicacy reserved for their masters. On January 1, 1804, Haitians gained independence and celebrated with Soup Joumou, cooked by Emperor Jean Jacques Dessalines' wife and offered to former slaves as a victory symbol. Haiti became the first black republic and the first Western Hemisphere country to abolish slavery. Today, Haitian families worldwide enjoy Soup Joumou every January 1st to honor their history and freedom.
