Franz Marc's The Foxes was painted in 1913 prior to WWI, amid the height of Marc's participation with the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter. Notoriously known for his use of color and spiritual symbolism, Marc believed that animals represent purity and truth in modern-day society.  This painting renders the foxes in a fractured fashion—angles and layering provide depth yet abstraction within movement. The Foxes conveys the artist's message colorfully and is a wonderful paint by numbers for those interested in modernism, symbolism, and an emotional application of color.
