Alternanthera, also known as Joseph's Coat, is a versatile annual perfect for landscaping. It can thrive in both sun and shade, but its vibrant colors are most pronounced in full sun. With a bushy, mounding growth habit, these plants reach heights of 10in-14in. During spring and fall, shorter daylight hours produce even more intense hues. Combining the equally tall red and yellow varieties creates a harmonious display. In most gardening zones, gardeners grow Joseph's coat as an annual. It grows as a perennial only in Zones 10 and 11. A full-sun location is preferred to bring out the colors in the foliage. Joseph's coat plants thrive when planted in April or May, but can also be successfully planted later in the season. To ensure optimal growth, select a well-draining soil with added compost and space nursery-grown plants 12 to 18 inches apart. When planting, dig a hole at the same depth as the nursery container, gently loosening any crowded roots. Settle the plant in the hole and backfill with amended soil. Be sure to water deeply to eliminate any air pockets. Choose your preferred size and color from the available options.
