Sarracenia x excellens Seeds Ease to Grow: Easy. Dormancy: Recommended. Parental Native Range: Wet Pocosins of Northern Florida. Zones: 6-8 (5-9). Sarracenia x excellens is a rare, naturally occurring hybrid, S. leucophylla x minor with tall, erect multi-colored pitchers accented with rows of white areole (windows) and a heavy network of scarlet red and purple veins. The hoods are broad and undulating with ruffled margins. They are tinted a pinkish red, and arch over the trap opening. It is a vigorous grower and forms large full colonies. As with other S. leucophylla hybrids, it has a nice show of Spring pitchers, but a great show of large, vigorous and stout Fall pitchers. S. x excellens prefers open, sunny, boggy conditions, and holds its color into the frost. The orange to reddish-orange are unusual for a pitcher plants. The flowers are fragrant, and bloom mid-season. This is an excellent accent plant for the bog garden, and is very showy in large numbers. This hybrid was named in 1
