Ease to Grow: Easy Dormancy: Recommended Parental Native Range: Wet Pocosins of Southeastern North America Zones: 6-9 (5-10) Sarracenia x Red Sumatra is a remarkable, nearly all red pitcher plant. It closely resembles S. flava atropurpurea, but with light venation, and a ruffled hood. There can be some hint of its S. leucophylla parentage on the top of the hood, and in new growth, with pink to almost white highlights. The nectar glands are quite prolific and attract lots of insect activity. S. x Red Sumatra has a few red traps in the Spring that darken to deep red by mid-summer. There is a second crop of maroon pitchers in the Fall, and many winter phyllodia (flat leaves). The showy flowers are orange-red, and mildly fragrant. They generally bloom from April to May before the pitchers fully develop.
