I recently read about a study (Wilson et al., 2014) where people were asked to sit alone in an empty room for 15 minutes with no stimulation—just themselves and their thoughts—or press a button that delivered a mild electric shock. Many chose the shock. That says something profound. Stillness isn’t easy. It holds up a mirror; silence reveals what busyness conceals. Avoidance of stillness is often an avoidance of the self. Challenges and pain don’t vanish when ignored—they find other ways to speak: in burnout, in projection. Introspection is how we interrupt that loop. I believe that progress without active, defined reflection is like driving without a map. Too much reflection and nothing moves; too little and you wake up lost. But direct
