Handpainted and researched map of the Near East following the First Crusade circa 1135. The first - and most successful - of the Crusades transformed the region. The Byzantine Empire has expanded at the expense of the Sultanate of Rûm, Armenian Cilicia has maintained independence but will shortly be conquered by the Greeks. The County of Edessa, County of Tripoli, Principality of Antioch, and Kingdom of Jerusalem have been established but are in a precarious situation, surrounded by the Muslims (Fatimids and Seljuks) and each other. I tried to stay as accurate to contemporary scripts as possible, so Greek speakers will notice, for example, some differences compared with modern Greek.
