"Resting Dolls" Original Nesting Set
Traditionally, Matryoshka dolls represent a universal mother with child and the generations of women living this legacy through time. I created this set of nesting dolls as part of an ongoing series portraying the ever-present juxtaposition of life and loss and the great cycle we all traverse together. The dolls are modeled off an earlier illustration, “Heavy Wears the Head,” which means that to wear one's head is to experience a heavy weight. It’s inescapable. The universe's ebb and flow does not shy away from this truth; we will continue to show up for it as did our ancestors before us. Life, death, and the human condition have influenced my work significantly. I know I am not in the minority when I express great sadness and anger towards the grotesque waves that continue to blanket our world. I am reminded daily of my privileges; I am thankful to be able to express myself for and against my government, continue to create art, and, most importantly, hold my child close. To the mot
