The tall bases are perfect for any cook surface especially gas! The original piece was "japaned" back in 1900 which was a protective black coating. For being over 100 years old, its in great shape and is a beautiful character piece to have in your gourmet kitchen. It's from the pre-WagnerWare days, when Wagner cast iron just carried the principal name. It's a hard to find piece that you'll love having at home! Tall bases are a blessing to have for all cook surfaces including out on the campfire because they allow for quick turning on any surface.
