Model 1853/89 Pioneer's side arm has a massive 18.25" long by 2" wide blade, fullered on one side and in overall bright finish with some spots of oxidation. The blade is also completely unmarked. Steel hilt has a cross-guard with two teardrop finials and is stamped with a serial number "213" , Reverse side stamped "2769". Grip is covered with the nut wood scales that became regulation in 1889, replacing the horn grips that had been used until 1853. Complete with a black leather covered wooden scabbard with steel throat and tip. This weapon was also issued to Medics, some Artillery gunners and Infantry Sappers. One of the most impressive European side arms, the M53/89 was used well into WWI and was only gradually replaced by the lighter Model 1915. Good condition.  Never sharpened. Rare find.
