It's Art Nouveau, our favorite art style, and Catholic examples of it are relatively rare. The colors are rich and subtle, the composition is intricate and lush. This painting draws us in. Angels are attending the baby Jesus, worshipping him, bringing him beauty, doting on him. Art Nouveau flourished in the opening years of the 20th Century. It was a popular style, not classical, so for the most part only younger Catholic artists did work in this style, and not for long, because within a few years the style had fallen out of fadhion. We were immediately drawn to this picture, an otherwise unknown treasure. Ann Macbeth (1870-1948) was primarily known as an embroidery artist and teacher, though she also did paintings, especially early in her career.
