"Crucifixion from Dante's Paradiso" Ezio AnichiniEzio Anichini (1886-1948) is one of our all-time favorite artists. Working mainly in the Art Nouveau style (or Stile Liberty as the Italians called it) of the early 20th Century, he was the master of dreamy Catholic art. Famous for his Litany of Loreto paintings and his covers for the Italian art magazine Scena Illustrata, he also did other illustration work, including scenes from Dante's Divine Comedy. With this, Anichini could mingle his own Catholicism with the great medieval Catholic poem, updating the latter with a beautiful contemporary style of art. He did dozens of pictures for Dante's poem. This one is from Paradiso, Canto XIV, which explores the resurrection. Dante's poem was written almost a 1000 years ago, but it is still greatly studied and admired.
