A priest friend of ours once said that if the Catholic Church had a Patron Saint of Humor, it would be G.K. Chesterton. One of the great writers and thinkers of the last couple of hundred years, Gilbert Keith was also one of the funniest and most influential. Always a conservative thinker, he eventually became a convert to the Catholic Church and made many arguments in defense of orthodoxy, including a book of that title. He also wrote novels and poems, including The Man Who Was Thursday, one of our favorites in college, as well as the great Father Brown mystery stories. He was a kind and genial man, and deployed paradox, his favorite tool of humor, to thwart George Bernard Shaw and the other socialists of his day. He had trouble with his mental health in earlier years, and that struggle to find order was one of the things that led him to God. He fought the good fight until the end.
