"God, Cosmos, and Humanity"Hildegard of Bingen This is an illustration by Hildegard of Bingen of one of her mystical visions. It is from the Scivias, a book she wrote describing and illustrating those visions. This particular image is from the third vision of Part I of the Scivias, often dated as from about 1150 up to 1165 A.D. In this vision you can see the four elements arranged in an oval. At the center is water, and at the center of it we can see a font of water springing from some mystical central point. Next is air and it is full of stars. Then earth, and finally fire. Each layer has a triune force blowing dynamism into the element. The International Society of Hildegard von Bingen Studies offers commentary on the book at www.hildegard-society.org.Hildegard of Bingen was a medieval abbess, prophet, artist, composer, physician, advisor to popes, and has of late been declared a Doctor of the Church, one of only 36. We know what her music sounded like. You can find it online!** IMPO
