Loaves and Fish–5th Century Christian Mosaic – Near Capernaum – 3 sizes – Catholic Art Print – Archival Quality

This mosaic is from a 5th Century church on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. It is just south of Capernaum, at the traditional site of where Jesus performed the miracle of feeding the 5,000. The mosaic is on the floor in front of the altar. According to John, Jesus took 5 loaves and 2 fish and multiplied them so much that all the people ate their fill and leftovers were gathered up in baskets. Today it is called the Church of the Multiplication. It is built on the site of the ancient church, first built around 350 A.D. and enlarged around 480, when the floor mosaics were added. It was destroyed in 614 by pagan Persians, and was not uncovered until the 1930s. The new church is built to the exact floor plan of the 480 church, and even uses some of the same building elements, such as the mosaics.
