A Mother and Child Looking at the Virgin and ChildReginald BottomleyWe like the pensive tone of this picture. In the painting, a real woman holding her baby is pondering a painting of the Virgin Mary holding hers. The woman is presumably thinking about their shared motherhood and is in some ways drawing closer to Mary. One of the beautiful things about the Catholic faith (the religion of love) is at the center of it is the love of a mother and child. Everyone who lives had a mother, and that gives us a kinship with the Madonna and Child. The woman in the painting might be feeling a deepening bond with Mary and a sense of the holiness of the tasks of everyday life. There is a lot to ponder here. Reginald Bottomley (1856-1933) was an English painter who lived in Luxembourg. He was a founding member of the Cercle Artistique de Luxembourg, an artists' support group still in existence today. You can find portraits and landscapes of his on the internet; they are all lovely and graceful. This
