The Latin at the bottom of this picture is from Luke 2:12, and it translates to, "You will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger." They were the words the herald angel said to the shepherds when he invited them to come worship the newborn Savior. The angel stands behind the creche like a cross, arms out, his robes around his feet in folds like gnarled tree roots. He is overseeing this joyful moment, and blessing it, as well as foreshadowing the end for which the Savior was born. This rare and splendid example of Art Deco Catholic art was done by Jozef "Jos" Speybrouck (1891-1956), a Belgian artist who specialized in Catholic images. He made his art with brilliant colors and clear lines, and worked in many media, including printmaking and illustration. He felt his mission was to uplift the faithful with art that was beautiful as well as catechistical.
