There is a certain type of Catholic genre which involves mysterious, moonlit prayers. We reverence God day at night, but day and night are different! This painting depicts monks within the walls of Certosa San Giacomo on Capri, an island a little ways off the west coast of Italy. Franz Ludwig Catel ( 1778–1856) was a very popular painter of his day. Born in Berlin, he lived much of his adult life in Italy, where he painted many breathtaking scenes of Italian daily ife in sumptous Italian landscaspes. He painted many Catholic paintings, including several versions of this scene, changing details, including one version where he switched in nuns for monks. It was also copied by other artists. He has a different painting of nuns in a cloister around dawn (or twilight) which we thinks is terribly good and hope to list soon. Franz Ludwig Catel ”Karthäusermönche in einem nächtlichen Klosterkreuzgang der Certosa di San Giacomo auf Capri mit Blick auf die Faraglioni”. Circa 1820/24. Oil on canv
