This cozy picture of a chapel in the woods warms our hearts. It was done by one of our favorite Catholic artists, Matthäus Schiestl (1869-1939), a German artist who was known primarily for doing Catholic pictures, mostly of Jesus and Mary, in settings of the German forest. They are all wonderful, with a personal, secluded feel, a mixture of heartwarming and mystical.The paintings were turned into holy cards, which were very popular and can still be found today as antiques. He also did altar pieces, portraits, and even German postage stamps. He usually worked in small sizes. This one was larger than some of his others we've seen, at 25.2x18.5 inches, although he has some that are bigger still. Oil on plywood.
