New! Madonna and Child – by Chinese artist Chen Yuandu –Catholic Art Print – Archival Quality
The Catholic Church is the universal church, and we enjoy seeing non-Western versions of it. This lovely and gentle Madonna and Child was done by Chinese artist Chen Yuandu (1902-1967). He was a pioneer of making Catholic art with traditional Chinese techniques. His goal was to help evangelize his country by the use of art. He was also known as Chen Xu, or after his conversion and baptism in 1932, Luke Chen. He taught traditional Chinese painting at Fu Jen Catholic University's Department of Art, as well as non-Catholic colleges such as the Beijing Academy of Fine Arts. He became a martyr for the faith under the persecutions of the Red Guard during the Cultural Revolution. His work has been influential not just in China, but across Christendom.
