Karl Gebhardt From (1860–1917) came from an artistic family. His father and uncle were professional artists, and both he and his brother became professional artists. Gebhardt studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, and later went to Rome to study art. He is associated with the Munich School, which had a carefully realistic style. He specialized in history paintings, but his oeuvre also includes interiors in an academic style.
